At a closed tournament in Budapest, Hungary (30-June-2021), Abhimanyu Mishra became the youngest Chess Grandmaster (GM) in history. The young American is from Englishtown, New Jersey and was 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days when he achieved the coveted status. Mishra (more than likely) would have become GM while he was 11 years old, if it wasn’t for the suspension of tournaments around the world due to the COVID pandemic. Mishra, who goes by “Abhi”, spent his free time wisely, studying the game and preparing for the return of chess tournaments.
We have every reason to expect Mishra will climb the ranks for the next 20+ years, given the history of players who achieve GM at such a young age. Prior to Mishra’s achievement, Sergey Karjakin of Russia (born in Ukrainian SSR) was the youngest ascend to GM at 12 years, 7 months old (2002). Karjakin still finds himself ranked amongst the greatest in the world (19 years after becoming a GM), ranking 14th on the FIDE Top 100 list.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) awards GM status when players successfully achieve ‘norms’, which include a FIDE rating + specific tournament performance success. FIDE was quick to make the monumental announcement yesterday, updating their ratings, and naming Abhimanyu Mishra the Youngest GM in History.
Congratulations to Abhimanyu Mishra of New Jersey for becoming the Youngest Grandmaster in the History of Chess!
